Barnet Schools Cross Country Championships 2007/8
Thursday 17th January 2008 at Copthall Stadium A very successful day for Mill Hill County High School was the highlight of this meeting which was supported by 128 male runners and 147 female runners from a total of 13 Barnet Secondary Schools.
The Under 13 Boys Race over 2280m was dominated from the 'off' by Callum McCormick of The Compton School but he was chased home by a gaggle of Mill Hill CHS runners who occupied the next 6 places with a fine diplay of team running over what was to become a very wet and boggy course.
Teams: 1. Mill Hill County 14pts 2. QE Boys 52pts 3. Ashmole 54pts
The following race for Under 13 Girls over the same course was another triumph for Mill Hill County as individual winner Freya Lenton won by 42secs as she front ran a time just 10secs slower than the boys winner. Bethany Carter (St Martha's) in 2nd had another 30secs cushion over St Michaels CGS pupil Lauren Dee who looks a good prospect for the future. The teams were closer but once again MHCHS had the edge with all four scorers home in the first 11 finishers!
Teams: 1. Mill Hill County 24pts 2. St Michaels 37pts 3. St Martha's 51pts
The Under 15 Boys Race over was another runaway victory, this time for nationally ranked Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers athlete Chandi Udewawala representing QE Boys. In his first year in the age group Chandi eventually won by 36secs from training partner Matthew McLaughlin of Mill Hill County while a titanic scrap ensued behind as Mahommed Ramli of The London Academy just lost out to the superbly timed tactics of Bradley Doherty (Finchley CHS) who had carved through the field from about 30th at half way. The team title again went to Mill Hill County HS but the scores generally were much closer in this race.
Teams: 1. Mill Hill County 40pts 2. QE Boys 52pts 3. Ashmole School 60pts
The Under 15 Girls Race, as expected, was dominated by club runners with Faye McCormick of The Compton School not only winning by over a minute but also leading her team to a convincing win as conditions became very difficult under foot.
Charlotte Wingfield (QE Girls) used her impressive finishing speed to just get the better of the vastly improved Amy Lugnano (The Mount) while the Compton girls closed in 6. 75 runners finished this race, which was a very pleasing feature of the afternoon.
Teams: 1. The Compton 14pts 2. St Michaels 56 3. QE Girls 56
The Under 17 & 19 Girls Races were combined and while numbers were very low and performances were very varied both winners were impressive runners. Anna Wallace (Mill Hill CHS) won the U17 race by 2 minutes from Harriet Caulfield of St Martha's with Jessica Odone (St Michael's) a further 36 secs behind.
The winner of the whole race and U19 champion was Sophie Proffit (QE Girls) who had almost a two minute advantage by the end of the race while Tessie Sarsfield (QE Girls) and Taya Holmes (Hendon) battled through the mud to claim medals.
Teams: U17 - 1. St Martha's A 35pts 2. St Martha's B 74pts 3, Whitefield 102pts
No schools fielded 4 runners in the U19 age group.
The Under 17 & 19 Boys Races were again combined over a 4450m course made boggy by over 200 runners throughout the afternoon. The Under 17 race was won by Josh Lawlor, the only representative from Woodside International School while the U19 Champion was Jake Shelley (Mill Hill County) who developed an impressive winning lead over school colleague Ross Sambrook with Ashmole's Tom Rose a further minute behind him. Disappointingly no schools fielded four runners in either age group so the team medals went begging!
