The splendid setting of Harrow School was again the venue for the 2010 Middlesex Schools Cross Country Championships. The course was relatively dry after cooler winds had dried out the ground over the previous week but it remained a fair test for all those athletes striving to gain a place in the county teams representing Middlesex Schools in the English Schools Championships at Heaton Park, Manchester on Saturday 21st March.
The opening race of the day saw a large field of Year 7 Boys battle it out with just 10 secs dividing the first five finishers with Owen Hurcum of Harrow AC and Harrow Schools just holding off Bab Babaloa Enfield Schools and Yousef Harizi of Enfield & Haringey AC and Haringey Schools in a grandstand finish. Harrow won the team competition with a clear victory over Richmond.
The Year 7 Girls set off next and once again the top 10 runners were to finish in within 12 secs of eachother as the order switched around regularly before Emma Hatchett of Enfield Schools just held off Victoria Sayer and Nyassha Thompson. Enfield took a clear win over Richmond in the team competition.
The first of the qualifying races was for the Junior Boys (Years 8/9) and the pre-meeting predictions were very difficult as many of the runners had not raced against eachother as the club scene ranks Yr8 as U13s and Yr 9s as U15! Ben Killip (St Marys, Richmond AC and Hounslow Schools) had to work very hard for his victory as Sam Wilson (Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers and Barnet Schools) had matched him throughout the whole race only to lose out to a very powerful finish while Harry Marsh of Harrow Schools used his knowledge of his home school course to secure 3rd with a well timed run for home. Harrow just edged out Hillingdon and Richmond for the team honours.
The Junior Girls (Years 8/9) race saw something of a procession as international triathlete Sky Draper (Harrow AC/Guest) ran away from the field in emphatic fashion to win by 27 secs over the improving Sophia Parvisi-Wayne (Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers and Haringey Schools) who just held off clubmate Freya Lenton (Barnet Schools).  Richmond dominated this race with Barnet just pipping Harrow for 2nd place in the borough competition.
The Inter Girls (Years 10/11) race threw up some surprises with last year's winner finishing 6th but there was no doubting the superiority of Molly Riglin (St Marys, Richmond AC and Richmond Schools) as she enjoyed a well deserved 40 secs margin of victory over the fast improving Molly Patch (Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers and Haringey Schools) with Lauren Major (St Marys, Richmond AC and Ricmond) a further 10 secs back. The Richmond squad were clear winners of the borough competition by a huge 120pt margin while five other boroughs finished within 12 pts of eachother as Harrow just pipped Enfield.
The Senior Girls (Years 12/13) was a small field and their race was run in conjunction with the U17s. Zoe Levin (Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers and Haringey School) won her first ever race by a clear margin as she was chased home by Jessica McCormick (Trent Park Runners and Barnet Schools) in 2nd and Anna Sparrow (St Marys, Richmond AC and Richmond Schools) in 3rd. Richmond were the only borough to close a team.
The Inter Boys (Years 12/13) Race was held in conjunctioin with the Senior Boys race and in all fairness the U17s looked much strong than their elders and will form the strongest Middlesex team in the ESAA Champs. Richard Charles (Ealing, Southam & Middlesex AC and Ealing Schools) looked to be completely over his period of injury as he led home the talented and much improved Rhys Spence (Hillingdon AC and Hillingdon Schools) while Year 10 Matt Mclaughlin (Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers and Barnet Schools) was just 3 secs behind. The team competiton was won by Hillingdon from Richmond with Barnet in 3rd.
The Senior Boys (Years 12/13) saw a clear victory from home school runner Chad Lambert (Milton Keynes AC and Harrow Schools) with Tadgh Grant (Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers and Harrow Schools) 30 secs behind and 800 metre specialist Ross Franks (St Marys, Richmond AC and Richmond Schools) a further 10 secs behind. Harrow won the boroughs competition from Richmond.
